De Maine began his study of painting at the Liverpool City School of Art. He later attended the Colorossi Academy in Paris and the London County Council School. After World War I he settled in New York City and soon embarked on a successful career as a watercolorist. He served as secretary of the American Watercolor Society and as its exhibition chairman. He was a member of the Audubon Society [does he mean Audubon Artists?], the Rockport Art Association, and the Salmagundi Club.
