Zygmunt Menkes studied at the Museum of Fine Arts, Krakow, Poland, and later in Berlin and Paris. Among his honors were the Clark Prize from the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C.; the Carol A. Beck Medal from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; and the Carnegie Award from the National Academy. His paintings are in public collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Newark Museum; the Tel Aviv Museum and the Betsalel Museum, Jerusalem, Israel.
