Label TextIt is likely that this painting is the small landscape owned by the engraver James Smillie, which the Apollo Association exhibited in 1839. James David Smillie, who like his father and brother was an Academician, gave the painting to the Academy in 1909. Doughty's reverence for nature was idealized, but distilled from personal experience. "Landscape" is a poetic invocation of beauty and harmony.
