Label TextThomas Hicks completed this rare landscape, unusual because Hicks was predominantly a portraitist, while traveling through Europe as a student. This romantic rendering of Italy's scenic ruins must have reminded Suydam of his own creative efforts while on the Grand Tour earlier in the decade and of the appeal that such sites of antiquity held for him.
