Label TextCropsey lent a portrait of himself by Hicks to the Academy annual exhibition of 1854. Hicks would have asked Cropsey to allow it to be submitted for the annual, suggesting that the painting was a recent work. It seems likely that the exhibited portrait is the present work; however, there is no proof of that, nor is there any record of the circumstances under which this work entered the collection-only that it had been acquired by the time of the 1911 inventory.
