Label TextThis painting was probably based on sketches made by Whittredge during the 1850s when he was in Europe studying and travelling. He was in Switzerland in the summer of 1856 with his friends Emanuel Leutze and William S. Haseltine.
On occasion, the painting's title has been amended with the words Foot of the Matterhorn, but, as art historian Bannon McHenry has pointed out, Meyringen and the Matterhorn are not located in the same section of Switzerland. If the extended title originated with Whittredge, it would indicate that the artist conceived of the work as a composed, as opposed to factual, landscape. However, no evidence for this is known.
Views of the Alps are rare in Whittredge's work.
