Label TextOver the course of her career Pineda was strongly inspired by the work of the early 20th century German Expressionist sculptors Ernst Barlach and William Lehmbruck. She primarily focused on depicting the female figure in the context of love, pregnancy, childbirth, child care, aging and mourning, and has been praised for her ability to infuse universal themes with a specificity that gives them a contemporary urgency.

Defendant dates from 1986 and was based on a newspaper account and photograph of an unfortunate woman on trial for the inadvertent drowning of her two infants. Pineda remarked: “I experience the feelings of others through art . . . . I share their suffering, their joy, their pondering of death and their celebration of life.”
