Label TextThis relief is typical of Derujinsky's religious works, many of which depict scenes from the New Testament. The narrative represented here is described in Luke 2:22-36. Joseph and Mary have brought the infant Christ to the temple to be purified, that is, circumcised. The holy man Simeon recognizes the child as the Messiah and proclaims his realization. Joseph holds a bird which is to be sacrificed in the temple in thanksgiving for the child's purification.
