Label TextThe sculpture is a portrait of the American writer Gertrude Stein (1874-1946). Stein is depicted in the famous 1905 portrait by Pablo Picasso, which she said "is the only reproduction of me which is always I, for me." Gertrude Stein and her brother Leo amassed a major art collection, with paintings by Picasso, Renoir, Gauguin, Cezanne, and many others literally covering all the wall space of their home. Artists, writers, and critics were frequent callers at the Stein home, which became known as the "Salon."n.d.
