Label TextAccording to his diary, Beckwith posed for this bust in New York in his own studio and in that of the sculptor beginning on February 28, 1887 and continuing into April of that year. Beckwith assisted Brewster in casting the work in plaster on April 13, 1887. The finished bronze was given to or purchased by the sitter later that year. The bust remained with the Academy as an indefinite loan following its exhibition in 1917, passing into its possession by Mrs. Beckwith's will.
