Label TextThis bronze figure of a nude, idealized female figure probably represents the Roman deity Fortuna. The figure stands on a wheel which emerges from a cloud and holds a small cornucopia in her left hand; both of these features are proper attributes for Fortuna. Corroborating this interpretation is the fact that Robert exhibited a small bronze figure called La Fortune at the Paris Salon of 1857 (no. 3075) and it may have been this or a similar conception which was shown there.
A Bacchanalian revelry which is depicted in relief on the supporting cylinder adds to the overall classicizing style of the work as does the shield emblazoned with dolphins which the figure holds in her right hand.
