Hughie Lee-Smith studied at the John Hungtington Polytechnic Institute, Cleveland, Ohio; the Art School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, Michigan; the Cleveland Institute of Art, Ohio; and Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. Among his honors are: the Clark prize and two Ranger purchase prizes, NAD; the Emily Lowe Award; Allied Artists of America; Audubon Artists; six awards, the Detroit Institute of Art; and the Maryland Commissin on Afro-American History and Culture. His paintings are include in public collections such as: the National Museum of American Art, Washington,DC; the Schomburg College; New York Public Library; the Detroit Institute of Art, Michigan; Howard University, Washington, DC; and the Parrish Museum, Southampton, NY. Among his teaching appointments have been: the Art Students League; Howard University, Washington, DC; the Princeton Art Association, NJ; Karamu House, Cleveland, Ohio; and Claflin College, Orangeburg, SC. He served on the Membership Committtee, NAD, 1979-1981.
