Umberto Romano studied at the School of the NAD, and the American Academy in Rome, Italy. Among his awards were: two prizes, the Art Institute of Chicago; three awards, the NAD: Carnegie, Saltus Medal and Isidor Medal; two prizes, Allied Artists of America, and an Audubon Artists Purchase Award. Early in his career he was a muralist, and also painted portraits. His easel paintings are in public collections such as: The Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Corcoran Gallery and the National Museum of American Art, Washington, DC. He was a Vice President of the National Academy, 1967-1974.
