Label TextManship and fellow-sculptor, George Demetrios, were among artists who gathered on Massachusetts's Cape Ann beginning in the early years of this century. When Demetrios needed a portrait of himself to present in response to his election to Associate in the Academy, he asked his friend and neighbor to cast a replica a relief portrait that Manship had earlier made of him. Manship was happy to comply and told Demetrios that "the one in my studio at Lanesville [Massachusetts] is for you if you want it." Manship made the Academy's replica between February and October, 1953. Around 1956, Demetrios returned the compliment in modeled a life-size bronze bust of Manship (Demetrios Estate).
Demetrios and Manship, both of whom were students of Charles Grafly, were evidently admirers of each others's work; according to Charles Ferguson, Manship thought Demetrios to be one of the best drawing teachers in the country.
