Label TextStewart is best known for his sculptures of animals, an interest he first pursued during his years in New York when he spent his free time sketching at the zoo. He did a number of works depicting herons, both as single figures and in groups, during the late 1920s and early 1930s. In the Academy's piece, a lone bird stands at rest, seen in profile. The work is flattened, conceived as being something between a relief and a figure in the round.
