Label TextThe George Inness Gold Medal, underwritten by George Inness, Jr., was awarded from 1901 to 1918 to recognize excellence in landscape paintings shown in Academy annual exhibitions. Hartley's design featured a bas-relief portrait of the painter, based on his earlier bust, on the obverse side.
Hartley showed a version of the medal (cat. no. 164) at the large National Sculpture Society exhibition held in Baltimore in 1908.
