Label TextIn 1963 the Washington branch of the English-Speaking Union commissioned a full-length, larger-than-life (9 feet high) statue of Winston Churchill for the grounds of the British Embassy in Washington. McVey was awarded the job over five other leading competitors, including Paul Manship.McVey based his initial studies for the statue on hundreds of photographs of Churchill and the final model was being cast in bronze by November 1965. The statue was unveiled and dedicated in Washington by Secretery of State Dean Rusk on April 9, 1966.
In 1965, McVey had four replicas of the head cast in bronze by the Bedi-Rassy Art Foundry of Brooklyn; these are at Chartwell, England, and in the Houston (Texas) Public Library and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. Other, smaller copies had already been reproduced and distributed.
