Label TextBecause Gaugengigl was a member of the Society of American Artists when that organization and the National Academy merged in 1906, he automatically became an Associate of the Academy. He therefore was not required to present a portrait to the Academy. When this work was accepted, Council made a point of extending its thanks to him for his "courtesy" in voluntarily conforming to the regulation.
