Label TextWilliam Sidney Mount and Charles Loring Elliott maintained a close friendship throughout their careers and in 1848 they painted each other's portraits as tokens of mutual respect. Since Mount produced several self-portraits during his career it is difficult to determine why he would have chosen to copy the portrait by Elliott (Suffolk Museum, Stoney Brook) which was in his possession. It is possible that the copy was commissioned by Samuel P. Avery or another collector.
