Shepard Alonzo Mount's portrait of his older brother probably was presented to the Academy at or near the same time as his portrait of himself. Either one may have been his presentation to confirm his election as full Academician, although tact--and the greater reputation of his older brother--suggest that William Sidney Mount would have been the more appropriate choice. On the other hand, enlightened self-interest might have prompted Shepherd Alonzo to be sure the family image was not represented at the Academy by only one of its artist sons. Whatever the circumstances and primary motives under which these paintings came into the Academy's collection, they retroactively honored the intention of the 1839 regulation.
