Label TextHubbell was elected a member of the Society of American Artists in 1905 and so became an Associate of the Academy automatically when the two organizations merged the following year. Thus he was under no formal obligation to present a portrait of himself to the Academy. His contribution of this painting, then, was probably intended to honor the tradition of Associate diploma portrait presentation.
