Label TextAcademy minutes state that Hall presented portraits in qualification for both his elections as Associate, indicating he had reclaimed his initial presentation at the time of his resignation of membership. It is impossible to be sure whether Hall is in his late twenties or late thirties in the portrait presently in the collection-that is, whether to meet the qualification requirement on his second election Hall returned his initial presentation to the Academy or created a more current portrait of himself.
Hall exhibited a self-portrait at the Boston Athenaeum in 1848, a work that was listed in the catalogue as being for sale. As it could not have shown the artist at an age greater than twenty-three-younger than the image in the painting presented to the National Academy-it seems unlikely that the present work was the same picture.
