Label TextFor many years Academy records cited this work as a self-portrait, ignoring its monogram signature. In 1988, however, the monogram was identified as Gaugengigl's. (An example of this form of signature is clearly seen in the reproduction of his self-portrait sketch in Robinson, p. 77.) Old records note that the reverse of the canvas, now obscured by a mounting panel, bears the date 1878, indicating that the portrait was painted soon after Gaugengigl arrived in Boston.
