Label TextAcademy minutes make no reference to the receipt of Griswold's presentation work in qualification of his election as Academician. However, the painting is included under this title in the 1911 collection checklist. By 1947 it was considered missing. When the collection was next inventoried, in the 1950s, the tiny monogram device, entwining the initials CCG-placed to divide the dating numerals 18 and 68-was recognized. Since that time, a crease running exactly through this inscription has obliterated part of it. Although there are no extant, dated works by Griswold with which this one might be compared, Henry Tuckerman's descriptions of two of the artist's more notable compositions, with their emphasis on transient effects of weather, are reminiscent of the Academy's painting:
[block quote:]
In his "Autumnal Scene," . . . a shower is just passing away, and the atmosphere is cool and clear. The effect is exceedingly well rendered; and in the beautiful picture called "The Last of the Ice," which was exhibited at the Academy recently, the effect of the mist hanging upon the highlands is most truthfully given.
