Label TextWeems studied with Anna Hyatt Huntington, and became an animal sculptor under her guidance. Circus Horse is one of Weem’s best known works, and was awarded the Ellin P. Speyer Prize at the 1931 annual exhibition of the National Academy.

With tongue-in-cheek, Weems related that she became an animal sculptor because “animals do not talk back. They do not bring their relatives to see how you are coming along and say, ‘There’s something wrong with the mouth!’ If you specialize in the human figure you are always doing a variation on a theme. But if you do animals, enormous variation can be found among them. All held together by the thread of comparative anatomy.”
