Label TextIn 1938, Eloise was awarded the Allied Artists Medal of Honor at the 25th annual exhibition of The Allied Artists of America. The New York Times art critic Edward Alden Jewell noted that "One of the few touches of humor in the show is provided by [Keith Shaw] Williams, who won the chief medal of honor in the painting division. This 'Eloise' of his, contrary to what you might suppose in first glimpsing it across the vast space of the Vanderbilt Gallery [of the American Fine Arts Building], proves on closer inspection to be a jointed manikin dressed in a slip and seated rakishly with one leg over the arm of a chair. This studio frolic is nicely painted and, being so unconventional in theme, tends to steal the show."
