He wears a blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up and holds a modeling tool in his left hand. A unidentified large sculpture of an allegorical female figure is in the background.Williams originally submitted a portrait of himself by James Montgomery Flagg to the Academy as his associate's diploma work. The present self-portrait was accepted as a substitute on December 27, 1939.
