Label TextThis landscape, which probably dates from the late 1850s, is composed in a manner that the artist seems to have favored: a large clump of trees in the middle-distance is placed at one side of the canvas, and a sharply receding diagonal leads away from it to a view, often of mountains, in the far distance. This sort of painting, reminiscent of Claudian-inspired landscapes and therefore directly comparable to American landscape painting of the time, would have greatly appealed to American collectors at midcentury.
