Label TextIn a May 1, 1922, letter responding to notification that he had been elected an Academician, Griffin offered the Academy its choice of any work of his then on exhibition at the Rehn Galleries. The painting Emil Carlsen and Hobart Nichols selected, on behalf of the Council, was accepted under the title An Autumn Day; however, it is listed in the librarian's report of 1923 as Midsummer Afternoon. There is no reference in minutes of any exchange of the work initially chosen. The changing colors of the trees in the painting suggest that the title under which it was submitted is appropriate.
