Label TextIn presenting his diploma portrait to the National Academy, Rossiter wrote to John L. Morton from Paris on January 15, 1841:

I send you for the Academy of Design a study from my own head in conformity to one of the rules of the Constitution relating to the Election of Associates. I regret that my time of late has been so much occupied as to prevent me sending a more worthy production, yet trust that it will be considered meritous for the Academy's reception. You may if you please exhibit it, tho[ugh I] am in hopes to send over one or more pictures that will better represent me in the coming exhibition. I trust that the Arts are in as prosperous a condition with you as here for the approaching annual display of living Artists in the Louvre bids fair to equal of not surpass former years (ABG: doesn't read correctly). Messrs. Durand & Casilear are at Rome, but [I] expect them here on their return by the middle of next month...
