Label TextIn ancient Rome the Vestal Virgins were responsible for tending the sacred fire carried from Troy by Aeneas. This painting is a departure from Rossiter's historical and religious compositions. It is probably the same as a painting of the same title which was painted by Rossiter in Rome and exhibited at the Academy's nineteenth annual exhibition in 1844.
