Label TextThe number of times this portrait was exhibited during Cox's lifetime is likely a reflection of his pride in this unusual likeness. The formal rigor of the strict profile view is not uncharacteristic of Cox, but the casual presentation of the sitter is somewhat atypical. The sensitivity of the likeness can perhaps be explained by Cox's friendship with Parrish; their families vacationed together in Vermont and New Hampshire, and references throughout the Cox's personal papers attest to the closeness of their bond.
