Label TextCox depicts a chamber that held the "loges," or private alcoves where students worked on the examination pieces that determined prizes and placement in the various studios of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. A quite similar view by Alexis Lemaistre of what appears to be the same room was engraved for his book L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts dessinée et racontée par un élève (Paris, 1889).
Ten days before executing this loose oil sketch, Cox wrote his mother about the coming contest: "Next week is to be the concours of the school and I think I am justified in expecting a much better place than last time." In fact, he placed eleventh in the Concours d'Atelier, a ranking that disappointed him.
