Label TextExecuted at a time when Cox was questioning his ability to paint landscapes, Noon failed to sell for its advertised price of three hundred dollars when it was shown in the 1887 Academy annual. However, at least one critic responded to its simple composition and uncomplicated color harmony, calling it "artificial yet attractive in its arrangement in planes and broad masses as regards both form and color" (New York Daily Tribune).
