Label TextAlthough the informal support and sketchlike appearance of The Arno, Florence argue for its direct, on-the-spot execution in Italy, most sources give the artist's return date to the United States as 1862, a year before the date on the study. Elizabeth McCausland, however, noted this work's relation to an 1861 drawing, In Bella Firenze (New York State Museum, Albany). Henry executed Italian scenes throughout the 1860s, including another Florentine view (of Santo Spirito), which appeared in the 1867 Academy annual.
