Label TextSonntag is known to have been in Cincinnati in the summer of 1860, not long after his election as Associate. It is likely the portrait was executed at that time. The appearance of the sitter's name on the face of the canvas where the artist's signature is expected, seems an early example of the Academy's desire to have identifying labels visible on Associate diploma portraits; the inscription is probably an addition by a hand other than Beard's.
