Sherwood was educated at Williams College and Columbia University School of Architecture, from which he graduated in 1936. Having received the Perkins-Boring Traveling Fellowship, from 1937 to 1938 he pursued his studies in Europe. Upon his return, he established his practice in Stamford, Connecticut. The firm of Sherwood, Mills and Smith has designed projects throughout the Eastern United States and in Central America. Sherwood had taken a major role in the development of Stamford, serving as commissioner of parks, chairman of the Stamford Joint Committee on Parks and Recreational Facilities, member of the Stamford Board of design, and Planning Board. He also served as director of the Stamford Museum and Nature Center. Sherwood was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
