Quaytman began studying at Syracuse University in 1955 and then moved to the Boston area where he studied at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University where in 1959 he received his B.F.A. He has earned numerous awards including two CAPS Grants in 1972 and 1978; Guggenheim Fellowships in 1979 and 1985; and an Artist's Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1983. In 1994 he received an Elizabeth Foundation Grant.
Beginning in the 1970s, the David McKee Gallery has been the site of a number of one-artist exhibitions of Quaytman's works, which have also been seen at Galerie Nordenhake in Malmo, Sweden. [Quaytman lives and works in New York City and is represented by David McKee Gallery, New York. ]
