Label TextThe conception was designed by Block in 1956 as an over-door panel in cast stone for Garfield's Restaurant at Church Street and Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, one of several restaurants in the New York area for which the sculptor created such work. Temptress won the artist an Honorable Mention at the 1956 National Gold Medal Exhibition of the Architectural League of New York and a Gold Medal of Honor for Sculpture at the 45th Annual Exhibition of the Allied Artists of America in 1958. He exhibited a colored plaster version of the work in the Academy Annual of 1957, and a detail in plaster in the annual of 1959.
The Academy's version is a one-fourth reduction of the original in Brooklyn.
