Label TextFellow-sculptor, Walker Hancock has recently written of Demetrios: "George was fond of the people who lived around him on Cape Ann. Many of them were models for the portrait heads which make up a large part of his work. The range of these portraits is immense. The ruggedness of a quarry worker and the tenderness of a young child are rendered with equal perceptiveness." The Academy's Young Sailor is evidently one of these works and a unique casting.
Demetrios virtually simultaneously presented the sculpture to the Academy as his Academician diploma work, and submitted it to the 1964 Annual Exhibition in which it was awarded the Watrous Gold Medal.
