Label TextGerome Brush, son of the famous painter George de Forest Brush, was a sculptor. Fry modeled this head either in Europe or in New York, where, according to the art historian Nancy Bowditch, he was studying anatomy with George Brush in the winter of 1910. Gerome was born in 1888 and thus would have been twenty-two that year, an age that fits the sculptor's image of him. Fry showed a cast of this work in the Academy annual of 1911; however, the fact that George de Forest Brush lent the work for exhibition suggests that, at that time, it was unique.
The younger Brush became a sculptor. He lived until 1954.
