Label TextHinton's sculpture was cast specifically for exhibition at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, and appears to be the only existing version of the piece. The mythical hunter Atalanta was the daughter of Iasus and Clymene, and was known for her swiftness of foot and chastity. In her youth she was warned by an oracle never to marry, but, being extremely beautiful, she had many suitors for her hand. She agreed to marry any man who could outrun her. The handsome Hippomenes distracted Atalanta by dropping golden apples in her path. Bending down to pick them up, she broke her fast pace. Hinton pictures Atalanta with an apple in each hand moments before she would lose the race to Hippomenes.
