Label TextSculptor and architect Charles Perry won the Prix de Rome prize from the American Academy in Rome in 1964 enabling him to study in Italy, where he stayed until 1977. Perry, like many American artists, was struck by antiquity's ubiquitous presence there. "Helmet Mace" is a work that combines the reduced and stylized geometric forms of the end of a Roman mace with those of a Roman helmet.
