Label TextIn the 1930s, Howard created a series of sculptures based on the subject of sports. The artist was an accomplished archer and fencer, and took an active interest in other forms of athletics, including boxing and wrestling. While living in France from 1905 to 1940, he went frequently to Parisian gyms to observe and photograph boxing and wrestling matches. In 1936, his sculpture exhibition Sports in Miniature at the Carroll Carstairs Gallery in New York featured pieces depicting hockey, diving, skiing, skating, archery, fencing, boxing and wrestling. The exhibition included Wrestling Group, which he modeled in wax and created in an edition of four bronzes.
