Label TextSacagawea, the Shoshone native American who accompanied Lewis and Clark on their famous expedition across the American west in the early 19th Century, stands wrapped in a long, wind-blown, cream-colored robe which bears two wide red stripes in front and back. Her long black hair sweeps out to the left. She holds a small child whose face is barely visible above the top edge of the robe.
The conception originated in a project for a monumental painted bronze privately commissioned for and donated to the Plains Indian Museum, Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming. Marie, a Shoshone Indian, posed for the monument. Smaller examples were cast in bronze, including a large edition of the polychromed version.
The Academy's cast was accepted as Jackson's associate's diploma work on April 6, 1981.
