The piece was originally designed for the garden of the Ziegler family estate in Noroton, Connecticut, around 1927. The model was exhibited in Paris and won Korbel election to the Legion of Honor. When the sculptor presented this cast to the Academy, he wrote to state that he believed the work to be among his best. Another cast of the sculpture was shown at the Academy in 1947 and was for sale for $3000.00. In 1952, Korbel translated the original design into marble on a commission from Arthur Collins of New York. That version was displayed in Korbel's New York studio in that year.
