Label TextJoyce J. Scott’s work reflects her perspective on American popular culture, her ancestry, and her community. Her pieces often serve as a commentary on issues regarding race, politics, sexism, and stereotypes. The collaged monoprints she gifted to the collection, Remembering and Remembering II, were made in reaction to September 11, 2001. The skeletal figure in the foreground of the work relates to her Soul Erased series done two years before 9/11. Overall, these works represent a critique of the rise in anti-Muslim sentiment that followed the attacks on the World Trade Center.Collections
