Label TextThe third digit of the date inscribed on this work has been intentionally obliterated, presumably by the artist. The canvas was attached to the masonite panel before the work was received by the Academy. Under microscopic examination both the numbers "2" and "4" appear to have occupied the third position in the date, but the overlapping of figures makes assured reading impossible. A dating of 1924 would be consistent with the character of the work, however, it might be conjectured that the artist reworked the painting to some extent and attached it to masonite in the 1940s, and at that time attempted to change the dating inscription.Born in Italy, Carlo Ciampaglia immigrated to America as a child. He was a portraitist and mural painter who studied at the American Academy in Rome between 1920 and 1923. Shortly after his return to the States, Ciampaglia completed "Village Scene," an unidentified landscape strongly reminiscent of the Italian countryside.
