Label TextBetween 1909 and 1923, Piccirilli produced a series of seven female nudes, which form the core of his non-commissioned work. Each was carved in marble and several were also cast in bronze in smaller versions. Almost all of these works are in repose, either kneeling or sitting with their eyes lowered or closed. Most also have a hand touching their head or face, and suggest self-absorption. The artist experienced difficulty in modeling The Broken Vase due to the unwed model’s developing pregnancy, which Piccirilli only discovered in the course of working on the piece.
