Label TextA version of this sculpture with the title Piggy's Back Seat Driver won the National Academy Gold medal in 1980 at the annual exhibition of that year. That work showed a man and woman in positions similar to those assumed in the cast which is now in the Academy collection; the former work, however, has the couple standing in an undersized automobile which acts as a base for the piece, thus the title of the work. The Academy's cast does not include the automobile. This version is one of an edition of five. [Edition of five is dated 1975; see Sculpture Center catalogue, 1978, in artist's file; on his own note to NAD in object file, Simon gives date of 1973 for NAD cast--possibly remembering incorrectly?]
